Yet Haiti has one of the proudest histories of the American republics as well as an old, rich culture. It is the kind of culture you don’t see at first glance. The significant part of Haitian culture is the part that is not immediately visible to the naked eye. It consists of a vast unwritten literature, dances, music… The Congo, Dahomey, Ibo and other religious groups have preserved, sometimes in their purest forms, the music of those regions of Africa from which the Negro slaves came in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries…

Haiti is often called the resume of Africa. When the Africans were brought to Haiti as slaves, they came primarily from the areas known as the Grain Coast, the Ivory Coast, the Gold Coast, and most of the rest of West Africa from Angola to Senegal. Some of them came from Central and East Africa. These Africans carried deep within themselves their rituals and cultural traditions. Songs and dances from many parts of Africa, and from diverse African cultures and ethnic groups crossed paths and mixed and fused in the island , creating new, uniquely Haitian expressions. Haitian dancing is essentially African in style. Some of the old traditions, songs and dances remained, predominantly from the Congo and the Dahomey regions, but they evolved through time and mixed with elements of the Haitian indigenous Indian, (the Arawak), and the French who occupied Haiti. Afro-Haitian dance has greatly influenced the modern dance world, largely through the research and exposure through Katherine Dunham. Tamboula expresses an African influenced technique based on Haitian traditional folk dances and rhythms. Join us today and learn about the Yoruba, Nago, Ibo, Congo, and the Dahomey people, etc…
